Rev. John H. Hull

A military funeral was held for Rev. John Henry Hull, who passed away in McAllen, Texas on January 18, 1929. An obituary for Rev. John H. Hull is found in the 1929 OBITUARY NOTEBOOK at the Sandusky Library. The article stated that Rev. Warren Tuttle, of Kent, Ohio, officiated at Rev. Hull's funeral, held at the Old First Presbyterian Church in Sandusky, Ohio. A firing squad from the Cleveland Grays gave a salute at the grave of Rev. Hull in Oakland Cemetery. Rev. Hull had served as the chaplain of the Cleveland Grays for thirty five years.

Parishes where Rev. John H. Hull served as pastor included churches in Marblehead, Ohio; Frankfort, Michigan; Kent, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; as well as churches in South Dakota. Rev. Hull was survived by his widow, two sons, and four grandchildren. Rev. John H. Hull was the son of John L. Hull, who was well known in Perkins Township of Erie County, Ohio. Rev. John H. Hull was also the brother of Judge Linn W. Hull.

Rev. Leverett Hull

Rev. Leverett Hull was born in Bethlehem, Connecticut on December 3, 1796. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1824. He attended New York's Auburn Theological Seminary from 1824 to 1827. He was ordained as a minister in Oneida, New York in 1829. He served in several congregations before moving to Sandusky, Ohio in 1846. Sadly, Rev. Leverett Hull died of cholera on September 3, 1852. Rev. Hull is buried in Sandusky's Oakland Cemetery.

Judge Linn W. Hull

Linn W. Hull was born in Perkins Township on April 9, 1856, to John and Angelina Walker Hull. He was educated at Oberlin College, Union College and Cornell University. He graduated from Cincinnati Law School in 1883, and soon began practicing law in Sandusky. Also in 1883, Linn W. Hull married Emily Hall. The "Bench and Bar of Ohio" stated that Judge Linn W. Hull was a "man of strong will, honest purpose, and great determination." Sadly, Judge Hull died on May 27, 1905, at the age of 40. His wife Emily had died in 1887, but three daughters survived their parents. Funeral services for Judge Linn W. Hull were held at the Congregational Church in Sandusky, with Rev. E.A. King, Rev. George H. Peeke, and Rev. J. H. Hull officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. A lengthy obituary appeared in the May 29, 1905 issue of the Sandusky Register.

Dr. George Anderson, Sandusky's First Physician

Hewson Peeke wrote in his STANDARD HISTORY OF ERIE COUNTY that George Anderson was the first doctor in Sandusky. Dr. Anderson was born in 1792, and moved to Erie County from New York. Peeke stated that “He was skillful in his profession, but died of cholera in 1834.”




George Anderson married Eleanor Hull in 1821. They had two children, Pallas and George J. Anderson. You can read more about the Anderson family in the HISTORY OF THE WESTERN RESERVE, which is available full text on Google Books.






















Dr. George Anderson died on August 26, 1834. His wife Eleanor Anderson died on April 25, 1866. Both are buried in Oakland Cemetery in Sandusky. In the background, behind the tombstones of Dr. and Mrs. Anderson, one can see the tombstone of their grandson, George F. Anderson, who died in 1937. A scrapbook which chronicles the life and activities of George F. Anderson is in the holdings of the R. B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio.
