Cause of Death: Tuberculosis

On May 12, 1919, Mrs. Julia Orshoski passed away at her home in Bay Bridge. (The Orshoski family had settled in Bay Bridge so that Joseph could work at the Medusa Cement factory.) Julia left behind her husband, Joseph, and six sons, the oldest one aged 14. Julia's death certificate listed her cause of death as tuberculosis of the lungs with a secondary cause of influenza.

Funeral services for Julia Orshoski were held at the Orshoski residence in Bay Bridge at 8:30 a.m. on May 15, with another service held at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 9:30. Father F. A. Boehnlein officiated. While the May 15, 1919 issue of the Sandusky Register reported that burial was to be at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sandusky, it turned out that Mrs. Joseph Orshoski was buried at the Castalia Cemetery.

The family story that was passed down is that after Mrs. Julia Orshoski died, Joseph Orshoski said to his family back in Hungary, "Send me a new wife, one named Julia." And, in keeping with his wishes, a new wife was found. Julianna Szomolya came to the United States on September 30, 1921. Joseph and the second Julia Orshoski were married for over fifty years. A great greatgrandaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Orshoski is also named Julia Orshoski.

Influenza claimed the lives of thousands of people in 1918-1919. See the website entitled The Great Pandemic for more information about this dreadful epidemic.

Very interesting story and research. Where in the world did you ever find that funeral photo? I have never seen anything like it. Nice work.

Mrs. Joseph Orshoski was my great grandmother, though she died long before I was ever thought of!

My cousin let me get a copy of the photograph. I feel so lucky to have such a rich part of my family heritage!

The second Mrs. Joseph Orshoski was the Hungarian great grandma that we all got to know and love. She made wonderful dinners and desserts. And her accent was so cute...she made out her grocery list in Hungarian!
