Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Bader

Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Bader are buried in the North Ridge section of Oakland Cemetery. The following listing is found in the "Family Register of German Settlers" of the book SANDUSKY THEN AND NOW:

Bader, Joh, Georg, scissors sharpener, b. 1804, d. 1879; his wife Caroline, b. 1804, d. 1876

The 1860 U.S. Census for Erie County has the name of a George Baden in 1860. His wife Caroline was 58, and the children were: Kate, age 18; Elizabeth, age 16; and Rosina, age 12. All family members were born in Baden, Germany. George's occupation was given as scissors grinder.

Oakland Cemetery interment cards state that Johan Bader was buried on January 29, 1879, and Caroline Bader was buried on November 14, 1876.

Karl August Leser























Karl August Leser's grave marker is found at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The Erie County, Ohio Cemetery Census, Before 1909 gives these birth and death for Karl Leser:

Born January 12, 1862

Died November 28, 1875

13 years, 10 months, 15 days

Son of Karl and Ursula Leser


We find this information about the parents of Karl August Leser in the book Sandusky Then and Now:

Leser, Chas., weaver, b. Jan. 28, 1817 in Kappel on the Rhein, d. Nov. 8, 1886; m . to Ursala Feist

In the 1880 Sandusky City Directory, there is a C. Leser who occupation was saloon keeper. The 1880 Census, available at FamilySearch, also lists a Charles Leser, who was born in Baden, age 63, living in Sandusky at the time of the 1880 Census. His wife Ursula was 57, and she was born in Baden as well. Also in the household was their son John, age 20. Charles Leser and Karl Leser are most likely the same individual, as the name Charles can be the German form of the first name Karl.

Constantine Zipfel

Constantine Zipfel was born in Baden, Germany in 1839 to Joseph and Mary Zipfel. The family came to the United States in 1853, and settled in Sandusky in 1856. Constantine Zipfel had a popular meat market in Sandusky for over thirty years. He also owned several farms and was involved in farming and raising stock. Mr. Zipfel marred Mary Daniel in 1860, and the couple had seven children. After Mary Zipfel passed away, Constantine married Miss Kate Lies.

The Sandusky Register of June 4, 1894 reported that, "Mr Zipfel was a business man of superior qualities, enterprising and prosperous, a worthy citizen, a kind neighbor, a warm hearted fiend and a devoted husband and father. He was a prominent member of St. Mary's Catholic church, and every effort for the upbuilding of our city and the welfare of the community had his support." Constantine Zipfel died on June 3, 1894, and is buried with his first wife in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
