Thomas Larkins was born to Patrick Larkins and Bridget Ryan in Sandusky, Ohio on March 2, 1869. Both Patrick and Bridget Larkins were born in Ireland. They attended Holy Angels Church in Sandusky. On March 8, 1869, Thomas Larkins was baptized into the Catholic faith by Father R.A. Sidley. His sponsors were James Larkins and Helena Ryan. Most likely James was the brother of the baby's father, and Helena, the sister of the baby's mother.
Baptism records from Sandusky's Holy Angels Church and Sts. Peter and Paul Church have been microfilmed for the Catholic Diocese of Toledo, Ohio Microfilm Project. These records are accessible through Family Search Labs.
Here are the steps I took to locate my Great Great Grandfather's baptism record:
After logging on to Family Search Labs,
I chose Record Search.
From the prompt Search or Browse our Record Collections, I selected Ohio Diocese of Toledo Catholic Parish Records, 1796-2004, from the USA collection.
Next, I selected Erie County and the city of Sandusky.
After clicking on Sts. Peter and Paul (Holy Angels and Sts. Peter and Paul baptisms are on the same reel of microfilm) I found a list of 17 categories. From this listing, I selected 1856-1921 Baptisms.
In the 339 images found in this collection of baptism records, my Great Great Grandfather Thomas Larkins' baptism record was found on Image 127.
It takes time and patience to manually page through hundreds of pages of church records, but it is worth the effort! Take a look at the Ohio Diocese of Toledo Catholic Parish Records if you have Catholic ancestors from Northwest Ohio in your family tree.
Note: While the tombstone of Thomas F. Larkins at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Sandusky has the year 1879 as Mr. Larkins' birth year, all vital and church records have 1869 as his birth year. Don't always believe what you see, even when it is carved in stone.
