Charles Samuel Langdon Gibson, Sailor on the Great Lakes
According to the 1880 U.S. Census, Charles Gibson was born in Kentucky. He was an African American, residing in Sandusky at the time, with his mother Clara, brother John, and niece named Hattie. For over twenty years, Charles sailed on the Great Lakes. Later in his life, he was employed by J.O. Moss, and he worked as a custodian at the old Moss bank building. Charles Samuel Langdon Gibson died on February 21, 1906, at the age of 59, after having been sick with heart disease. Funeral services for Charles Gibson were held at the A.M.E. Church on Neil Street, and he was buried in Oakland Cemetery. An obituary for Mr. Gibson appeared in the February 22 and February 25, 1906 issues of the Sandusky Register.
