Ceremony at Johnson's Island to be Held on June 12, 2010

The Ohio Chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will rededicate the monument at the Cemetery on Johnson's Island at the site of the former Civil War prison camp which housed hundreds of Confederate officers during the war. The Sandusky Register features a front page article today, by Sarah Weber, which discusses the upcoming event. Photos of the bronze monument sculpted by Moses Ezekiel also appear in the the article, taken by Register photographer Laura Woolf.

Photographs taken at the original unveiling of the Confederate Cemetery monument in 1910 appear at the Sandusky History blog.

Dorene, Thanks for posting this information. Some of my MURFF relatives from Monroe County Missssippi were POWs at Johnson's Island. Wish my health would permit my attending --- but I must send my regrets. I do hope that you can attend and perhaps take photos for us both! I would love to hear "Dixie" being played in Sandusky Bay.
Regards,
