Frank Gilkeson Sloane, 1857-1931

During a recent visit to the Follett House Museum in Sandusky, Ohio, my family and I noticed this portrait of a youngster with long curls. The young man in the portrait is Frank Gilkeson Sloane, the son of Rush R. Sloane and his wife, the former Sarah Elizabeth Morrison. He was born on September 5, 1857. Rush R. Sloane was a well known lawyer and abolitionist in Sandusky, Ohio. For many years, Frank G. Sloane worked in the lumber industry with Schoepfle & Sloane. In 1892,  Frank Gilkeson Sloane married Laura Helen Wilcox.

Sadly, Laura died in 1909. On November 25, 1931, Frank G. Sloane died at his residence on Franklin Street in Sandusky, Ohio. He was survived by his daughter, Mrs. Worth Curtis, two sisters, four nephews, and a niece. Funeral services for Frank Gilkeson Sloane were held at the Sloane residence on Saturday, November 18, 1931. Burial was at the Sloane family lot at Oakland Cemetery. An obituary for Frank G. Sloane appeared in the November 25, 1931 issue of the Sandusky Star Journal.

The Sloane monument at Oakland Cemetery is located in the North Ridge section of Oakland Cemetery.
